Chapter Eight

Brendan was out of town Monday night in Chicago for the interview. And I was going a bit stir crazy. So much so I started wondering if I could move away from all that I knew to follow Brendan if he got the job. When I got like this, I had to see Aunt Linda. I would have gone to my mom, but she only had a relationship with my dad.

Aunt Linda, on the other hand, had never been married and seemed to be fine with that. She also always had a new man in her life for as long as I could remember. There was a time when she didn’t live in Charlotte, so she was the world traveler in the family.

It was after hours at Southern Delights. I stopped in sometimes after work to write, but my mind wasn’t into the next story. Besides, I needed to be marketing my latest release so I spent time pulling my newsletter together for my readers instead. At least I was doing something productive with my mind instead of pondering a potential breakup.

The sounds of Mariah Carey belting out “All I Want for Christmas” had me cringing.

“Why are you looking so down?” Aunt Linda said as she wiped down the booth behind me.

“Did I mention Brendan was laid off?”

“What?” Linda stood up. “Now, right before Christmas.”

“Yes, they gave him a good severance package, but he’s anxious to find another job.”

“That’s understandable. Being out of work is scary. So what’s he going to do?”

“He’s in Chicago for a job interview.”

Aunt Linda held her hands to her chest as if I frightened her.

I shook my head. “Yeah, that was my reaction. I’m not sure what’s going to happen to us if he gets the job.”

“He’s desperate. Sometimes we step out for opportunities that may not be for us. I don’t see Brendan taking a job anywhere but here in Charlotte. He’s obviously in love with you.”

“Suppose he can’t find anything in Charlotte.”

Aunt Linda raised an eyebrow. “You know I’m not the most holier-than-thou Christian, but I’ve been around enough to know this faith thing doesn’t work if you don’t pray and trust God. We can’t let worry consume us. God brought you and Brendan together. I believe He has big plans for both of you.”

“I hope so.”

Aunt Linda placed her cleaning rag and spray bottle on the table as she climbed into the booth to face me. “Nia, I’ve known you all your life. You’re going to make yourself sick with worry.”

“I can’t help it. I get obsessed by all these what ifs. I know I should trust, but how do I turn my brain off from wondering? It’s so hard, Aunt Linda. I’ve even thought about…” I sighed, unbelieving what I was about to admit. “I thought about if the job in Chicago was really what he wanted, maybe I could move there.”

Aunt Linda cocked her head and looked at me as if I’d grown something on my face. “Okay, you know better.
